We have some recent additions to our library you might like to know about. This first book is written by Jerry Spinelli, author of popular titles Maniac Magee, Stargirl and Loser. If your child has or had Mr. Farley in fourth grade, chances are they are big fans of Mr. Spinelli’s work due to his amazing read-alouds. This one is a 2018 Newbery contender (in my humble opinion).

The Warden’s Daughter, (2017)

by Jerry Spinelli

wardendaughter

Goodreads summary: Cammie O’Reilly lives at the Hancock County Prison–not as a prisoner, she’s the warden’s daughter. She spends the mornings hanging out with shoplifters and reformed arsonists in the women’s exercise yard, which gives Cammie a certain cache with her school friends.
But even though Cammie’s free to leave the prison, she’s still stuck. And sad, and really mad. Her mother died saving her from harm when she was just a baby. You wouldn’t think you could miss something you never had, but on the eve of her thirteenth birthday, the thing Cammie most wants is a mom. A prison might not be the best place to search for a mother, but Cammie is determined and she’s willing to work with what she’s got.
“Jerry Spinelli again proves why he’s the king of storytellers” (Shelf Awareness, starred) in this tale of a girl who learns that heroes can come in surprising disguises, and that even if we don’t always get what we want, sometimes we really do get what we need.

The Junior Library Guild just sent the latest book in the Tuesday McGillycuddy series (a series new to me) and I scrambled to order A Week Without Tuesday and Blueberry Pancakes Forever.  We now own all three books in the series. Fun fact: Angelica Banks is actually a pen name created by two busy mom co-authors who write the series together.

Finding Serendipity (Tuesday McGillycuddy #1) , (2015)

by Angelica Banks

findingserendipity

Goodreads summary: When Tuesday McGillycuddy and her beloved dog, Baxterr, discover that Tuesday’s mother―the famous author Serendipity Smith―has gone missing, they set out on a magical adventure. In their quest to find Serendipity, they discover the mysterious and unpredictable place that stories come from. Here, Tuesday befriends the fearless Vivienne Small, learns to sail an enchanted boat, tangles with an evil pirate, and discovers the truth about her remarkable dog. Along the way, she learns what it means to be a writer and how difficult it can sometimes be to get all the way to The End.

We have a lot of Rick Riordan fans in our school.  His latest series, featuring Norse mythology, is a huge hit with our readers. Our library has The Sword of Summer and The Hammer of Thor. Book three, The Ship of the Dead, will be released on October 3, 2017. I happened to recently come across this companion guide for their reading pleasure.

unofficialmagnuschase

Goodreads summary: Fascinating background facts, stories and mythological information for the upcoming Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series.

The much anticipated first book in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series is about to be released and long-time fans of best-selling author Rick Riordan can’t wait to follow the adventure of his newest hero—Magnus Chase. However, unlike Riordan’s previous series that placed protagonist Percy Jackson in a magical world based on Greek mythology, these new thrillers follow Magnus’ adventure in an entirely different world, one populated by Norse gods and monsters. Conceived and written specifically for young adult readers, this enjoyable and informative educational companion offers an in-depth look into the exciting stories and characters of Norse mythology. The ancient stories are retold like modern thrillers in this fast-paced and informative primer. Containing over 50 black-and-white illustrations of gods and monsters, it allows eager readers to have fun while becoming experts on the powerful god Odin, his fearless wife Frigg, shape-shifting Loki and hammer-wielding Thor.

The Wings of Fire series is well-loved by our fantasy fans. We just acquired book 9 which reminded me to highlight this popular series for those who may not know about it.

Talons of Power (Wings of Fire #9), (2016)

by Tui T. Sutherland

talonsoffire

Goodreads summary: The war is over. The false prophecy has been fulfilled. But the dragonets still have enemies. A dark evil, buried for centuries, is stirring.

And a young NightWing may have had the first true prophecy in generations . . .

Something is coming to shake the earth
Something is coming to scorch the ground
Jade Mountain will fall beneath thunder and ice
Unless the lost city of night can be found.

Don’t miss the next chapter in the epic, bestselling Wings of Fire series!

Ben Hatke is the creator of Little Robot and the Zita the Spacegirl series, graphic novels our readers devour. He has a new series to look forward to.

Mighty Jack (Mighty Jack #1), (2016)

by Ben Hatke

mightyjack

Goodreads summary: Jack might be the only kid in the world who’s dreading summer. But he’s got a good reason: summer is when his single mom takes a second job and leaves him at home to watch his autistic kid sister, Maddy. It’s a lot of responsibility, and it’s boring, too, because Maddy doesn’t talk. Ever. But then, one day at the flea market, Maddy does talk—to tell Jack to trade their mom’s car for a box of mysterious seeds. It’s the best mistake Jack has ever made.

What starts as a normal little garden out back behind the house quickly grows up into a wild, magical jungle with tiny onion babies running amok, huge, pink pumpkins that bite, and, on one moonlit night that changes everything…a dragon.
